Retzmix #6 - (Clyde's Mix) - January 2004

Justin treats us to a playful mix with some serious undertones.

Zooropa acts as an overture and foreshadower of tracks such "Jesus Came From Outer Space" and "2000 Light Years From Home."

Definitely the sort of playlist that can change meaning depending on your mood. A clever list.

On Holiday 18 / Independence Day: Tuxedo, Mariah Carey, Elliott Smith, Sufjan Stevens, Drake, Ms. Lauryn Hill

Flipped the script a bit -- Went low, introspective, implosive.

The longer track lengths let each mood develop itself completely. The end result is lush and expansive.

Vinyl Club #1: Bereft "Lost Ages"

From their website:

"What began as a steadfast expression of the human condition, moves forward with momentum for Madison, WI’s atmospheric doom metal band, Bereft.

Founded by Zach Johnson and Alex Linden in 2011, the band is rounded out by Cade Gentry on bass and Jerry McDougal on drums.

Bereft weave elements of doom with black metal and post-metal into exhaustive, dynamic songs. Lyrically, they draw from their views on religion, politics and social injustice.

It is in this spirit that they create their own style of powerful metal, unbound to any genre and fully conscious of the impression."

Reviews:

CVLT Nation – “The fuzz-caked bass that opens “Unwelcome” doesn’t prepare you for the almost Jesu soaring that is about to lift off.”

The Monolith – “Bereft have made the most of that this half-hour by putting forth a very convincing release that should set them up for some serious success in the near future.”

Cosmos Gaming – “Bereft’s inclusion of clean singing is what surprised me the most though, as the transition over to very soft, melodic ranges gives their material quite a bit more depth than some of the others in the genre. It’s a direction they should definitely expand upon as they progress, especially since they have a vocalist that’s very capable of pulling it off.”

Mostly Midwest – “The sharp cuts from atmospheric noise into blast beats never sound forced, and their ability to add doom to the mix is what I love about the record.”

OccultBlackMetalZine – “Bereft are a very great sounding mixture of post black metal and doom”

Monday Mix 180625: Miami Horror, Foster The People, Angus & Julia Stone, MGMT, Cut Copy, Broken Bells, Leon Bridges

Keeping the summery vibe going this week.

Bumped this one up in the queue a little bit because "Sit Next to Me" and "Bad Bad News" are on the radio right now.

I was going for a laid back, warm, easy to listen to set of songs, and I tried to push that a little with "Hearts On Fire" and "Holding on for Life."

I chose the remix of the latter both to explore the edges of this warmth in texture, and also because the original version bends towards the sadness in the song. Even though the remix maintains the darkness, it offers a sense of direction not found in the original.

"Electric Feel" is a throwback in the context of this list, and I use it here not only because I think it's an interesting listen, but also to give respect to Oracular Spectacular, which, in hindsight, has become a sort of benchmark album.

"Bad Bad News" may seem like a departure from the list, but I like it as return to the easy-going vibe, and maybe even as a change in direction, a suggestion to further listening.

Justin leads us on a groovy, grinding ride that builds to Iron Maiden's eight minute epic "Hallowed Be Thy Name."

hooked.evd/MartinSolveig: deadmau5, Kelis, Calvin Harris, Sigala, Martin Solveig, ZHU, Martin Garrix

I'm hooked on Martin Solveig.

As the weather heats up, I'm always excited for a mix that includes one of his singles and "Intoxicated" has special meaning to me.

I created a list full of songs from the same genre that similarly have meaning to me and generally make me want to move.

Monday Mix 180618 / Summer Mix: Sean Paul, Major Lazer, N.A.S.A., Wayne Wonder, Santigold, Eve, Brick & Lace

Shortly before Sean Paul's Dutty Rock album hit (2002), I was checking out dancehall 12"s on Turntable Lab, which is still my first go-to for interesting records.

I had heard the Buy Out riddim (check out this riddim compilation) and was immediately hooked by its bounce. I ended up picking up a couple of VP (major Jamaican record label) singles: "Money To Burn" by TOK, and "Like Glue," which had a moody b-side "Gimme The Light." "Gimme The Light" ended up being an early single, but even that was overshadowed by "Get Busy."

"Get Busy" is on the the Diwali Riddim, which you can hear in this playlist on "No Letting Go" and "Love Is Wicked." It's also the riddim for Rihanna's "Pon de Replay," which is featured on our 101 Songs of Summer playlist, which all seven of these songs are pulled from.

"Get Busy" is a tour de force, but I think I'll always love "Like Glue" best.

Retzmix #4 - December 2003

A bit more subdued, reflective playlist from #3. A perfect "Sunday Morning" playlist.

Justin puts Belle & Sebastian first here, which I appreciate. I think the first cut of a playlist should welcome the listener and set the rules/tone for the list. "If She Wants Me" does that, acting almost as an overture, in trademark Belle & Sebastian theatrical style.

The track length also helps immerse the listener into the world of the playlist. Over five minutes long, it creates a margin/buffer and gives ample opportunity to "get into" the playlist.

dolphinbright, "Jamming Divas of Summer Love"

Leslie kills it with this list. Thick a.f. and way-jamming! Positively DRIPPING in chunky disco vibes.

The French Disco Boogie Sounds ("Movin," Jackie Esam) series is a really fun listen. It's no wonder French House is so groovy and fun.

For further listening, Leslie suggests Diana Ross' "Love Hangover," and I'm with it.

Retzmix #3 - April 2003

A really great jangly, punchy vibe.

Chuck Berry and Waylon Jennings may seem to stick out, but Justin has tucked them into the list in such a way that they feel logical and fresh when they come on. Velvet Underground and Ramones help bridge the gap.

Half the tracks here are under three minutes long. Perfect for these raw energy blasts with nice hooks and catchy melodies that leave you wanting more.

Top Tunes 1805: Childish Gambino, Drake, Ariana Grande, Drake, Zedd, Blocboy JB, Post Malone, Bebe Rexha

#1 THIS IS AMERICA / Childish Gambino

Erin - ⭐️⭐️⭐️ "Turn it up" I'm a fan of Childish Gambino generally, but I don't think it's a hot take to say that the music video is what charted this month and not the song. All said, I hope this brings Childish Gambino a lot of new fans.

Matt - ⭐️⭐️⭐️ "Turn it up" Always pleased when a protest song charts. Taking it only as a piece of music, I'm into it. I like the blends of rhythms, and that BASSSSS. Track feels like a cousin of a Black Panther Soundtrack cut. What I cannot get over is that I don't see Donald Glover as a rapper, and that may color my perception. To that end, it doesn't sound to me like he's "rapping," just saying his lyrics. The net effect, though, is that it's a lot more palatable and draws focus to the message and the instrumental. I would like to hear a better rapper on this beat, but it's a signature track of summer 2018, to be sure.

#2 NICE FOR WHAT / Drake

Erin - ⭐️⭐️⭐️ "Turn it up" Points to Drake for picking a spectacular sample that carries the song.

Matt - ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ "My jam" Wow, this one snuck up on me. I LOVE chopping and cutting, and this one goes all the way for it. I can't turn the radio up loud enough! I'm over Drake, but this cut is a serious jam. Wow -- what another rapper could to do to this beat!!

#3 NO TEARS LEFT TO CRY / Ariana Grande

Erin - ⭐️⭐️⭐️ "Turn it up" I love Ariana so I'm biased towards her, but I do genuinely enjoy this song. Looking forward to what the rest of the album will be.

Matt - ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ "My jam" AG completely won me over on her epic "Dangerous Woman" album. I love love love this song and wanted to rank it as high as possible. I just happen to love socially powerful pop music and intense beat chopping over smooth a.f. samples just that much more. Grande's lilting vocal moves us back and forth from the streets to the sublime on this song, and I'm with her for every tension build and euphoric release.

#4 GOD'S PLAN / Drake

Erin - ⭐️⭐️ "Leave it on" Perfect example of a forgettable Drake track. Do we all like Drake so much just because he releases a new single before we can get sick of the last one?

Matt - ⭐️⭐️⭐️ "Turn it up" Last month when we talked about this one, Erin pointed out that line about loving his bed and his momma. Maybe it's because the rest of the song is so dull, but when the beat hits after that line, it feels so good.

#5 THE MIDDLE / Zedd

Erin - ⭐️⭐️ "Leave it on" New summer EDM please.

Matt - ⭐️⭐️ "Leave it on" Maybe Maren Morris and Bebe Rexha ("Meant To Be") should have swapped features. Sounding like a reprise of "Stay," I was hoping this track was an alley-oop to a blazing summer single. * Ticking clock sample * I'm still waiting...

#6 LOOK ALIVE / BlocBoy JB

Erin - ⭐️⭐️ "Leave it on" I recently took a spin class that used this song and really sold it to me. It's got great rhythm and energy.

Matt - ⭐️⭐️ "Leave it on" Do you think Drake is rich?

#7 PSYCHO / Post Malone

Erin - ⭐️⭐️ "Leave it on" I found out that Post Malone hangs out with one of my favorite YouTubers so that gives him points.

Matt - ⭐️ "Turn it off" One thing I have a hard time tolerating is glorification of ignorance. I do like it when he talks about "clowns and all the bozos," though.

#8 MEANT TO BE / Bebe Rexha

Erin - ⭐️ "Turn it off" We get it. Maybe you will. Maybe you won't. Maybe this will finally stop charting so we can move on..

Matt - ⭐️ "Turn it off" Lyrically and sonically hackneyed.

Retzmix #2 - November 2002

A healthy dose of Dylan and the Stones. A consistent vibe with a number of unexpected selections that keep you engaged.
