Monday Mix 180129: Tom Petty, Neil Diamond, Neil Young, Depeche Mode, Steve Earle, Nine Inch Nails, U2
A handful of my favorite songs Johnny Cash and Rick Rubin used on their american recordings project. That project yielded a set of nice recordings, but also pointed back to the original versions. These original versions create a kind of songbook of well-written songs with significant lyrics.
Support of folk, country, and Americana, as genres, can almost be a political stance. Rubin selects a wide swath of great songs from several genres, and Cash, in turn, treats each song with a sort of reverence (a feeling particular to the whole series). As a result, these series of recordings, though at first listen easily identified as Americana/related, rises above that clique of exclusivity, and opens each song to a wider, unifying review.

Monday Mix 180122: Pailhead, Fugazi, Minor Threat, Bad Brains, Circle Jerks, Dead Kennedys, From Ashes Rise, Atari Teenage Riot, Ec8or
A little bit of thrashing around here.
Dischord Records founder Ian MacKaye was in Pailhead, Fugazi, and Minor Threat. A passionate visionary.
"Pay To Cum," "World Up My Ass," and "Holiday in Cambodia" were all on the same punk sampler that was my gateway to that world. Within the genre, these tracks stand out.
Saw From Ashes Rise at some basement or record store show over a decade ago and they blew me away. I think they've got an edge -- a point of view -- that sets them apart.
ATR in Chicago was probably the best concert I've ever been to. Completely overwhelming and disorienting. Catharsis ftw. Ec8or, Shizuo, and other DHR acts get overshadowed, but they deliver, as well.

Monday Mix 180115: White Town, No Doubt, Björk, Donna Lewis, The Cardigans, Jennifer Paige, Savage Garden
Very Nineties.
Soft, fun, moody, dangerous, romantic.
If you heard these songs in your youth, you'll likely be transported back.

Monday Mix 180108: Mayer Hawthorne, The Weeknd, Future, ScHoolboy Q, Eminem, Snoop Dogg
I made this one to kind of showcase why I think Kendrick Lamar is talented.
In each of these features, he takes on the tone of the track and adds to the track with both style and content.
I tried to choose a wide variety of instrumentals, to show his versatility.
