Head to Head: "Yeah" Sex Bob-Omb, Charli XCX, Moby, Gorillaz, Bebe Rexha, Austin Mahone, The Rolling Stones, Disclosure, Daft Punk, The Sounds, Big K.R.I.T., KMFDM, Black Star, Marian Hill, Richie Hawtin

This playlist is full of artists that I truly adore.

Scott Pilgrim vs. the World is a great movie with a great soundtrack and I'm excited I had an excuse to include them in a playlist since it varies a bit from my usual sound.

You've seen Charli XCX and Bebe Rexha on other playlists I've made and they make frequent appearances on playlists I haven't shared yet.

I go way back with Moby and Gorillaz, though my appreciation for them is so specific that I haven't found a proper playlist to include them yet.

The Rolling Stones and Disclosure are two artists I appreciate for individual moments of time, memories attached to a song.

Lastly, "Mmm Yeah" is just a great guilty pleasure. The music video came out while Vevo TV was still a thing and I would watch the countdown at least once daily. And who can resist Pitbull? If the answer is you, we won't have a lot in common at wedding receptions.

Me, well, as for me, I took a pretty literal interpretation of the challenge.

I like that original "Ooh Yeah" from Moby, too, but wanted to shine a light on Kris Menace, who I think does a great job with this sort of sound.

I don't know why I keep going for that Lord of the Lost sound, but I do. I think they just do it so completely.

"Minus/Orange" samples Yello's "Oh Yeah." So, that's fun.

Monday Mix 180128: Opus III, Pet Shop Boys, Aphex Twin, Orbital, Hardfloor

For lush vibing and zoning.

I love classic Hardfloor, and their new album is a mature take on acid. I really enjoy it. This track is not indicative of the album, but I think the synth line is so groovy it fits as a nice cap to this playlist.

I have to admit that the Isley Brothers' "Footsteps In The Dark" sample is so iconic, that I do struggle during the parts when it's not playing, just waiting for the sample to come back.

I included a "More Mix" on this post to sort of chronograph use of the sample, from Compton's Most Wanted use of it in 1991, to 2017's Drunk album from Thundercat.

Viva Latina: "Verano para siempre" Wisin, Juanes, Ximena Sariñana, J Balvin, Shakira, Lit Killah, ChocQuibTown, Esteman

The weather is cold and gray. Let’s return to the sunshine and joy of summer days. This blog features songs that for me are an escape to those warm carefree summer days.

The first song by Wisin and Ozuna is aptly named “Escápate conmigo” (Escape with me).

Other favorites on this list include the super tight “Lo Bailado” by Ximena Sariñana. I’m dancing around in my seat listening to it now.

Toward the end, I’ve included “Tan Bien” by Lit Killah-first great name and then the horns mixed in with the dance beats and flow are a winner for me. I also love that young Uruguayan Agus Padilla is featured.

I end with a dance hall feel with “Baila” by Esteman. Relax, dance, and escape with verano para siempre here on Viva Latina.

Monday Mix 180121: Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, Ramsey Lewis Trio, Sam Cooke, Four Tops, Diana Ross

Exploring the live vibe of mid-sixties Motown/R&B. What a party!

My favorite cut on this list is "Baby I Need Your Loving." I love the song anyway, but the passion in the vocal in this version feels a bit more raw, and I connect with the audience interaction part. Sailing.

If you listen with crossfade, it almost sounds like all these acts are sharing the same stage.

hooked.evd/HungUp: Madonna, Kylie Minogue, Britney Spears, The Pussycat Dolls, Lady Gaga, Fergie, Nicki Minaj

I recently heard Madonna's 'Hung Up' on the radio, and I forgot what a jam it is. Growing up I went through a serious Abba phase and - fun fact - 'Hung Up' is the only song Abba allowed their music to be sampled on. (It's "Gimme Gimme Gimme" for casual Abba fans.)

Hung Up takes me back to hot pop dance jams and this list is full of nostalgia for me. What songs from your youth would fit on this list?

Monday Mix 190114: Beyoncé, Mis-Teeq, Janelle Monáe, Tinashe, Ashanti, Rihanna, Nicki Minaj, Christina Milian

The kernel track for this list was Nicki's "Majesty," off her new album Queen, that "Chun-Li" is also on. It's  a great song on a great album, but after the list started to take shape, "Chun-Li" started to fit in better among these other chart-toppers. I was hesitant to use "Chin-Li," because it may seem like a default "oh yeah and put that new Nicki on there, too" sort of thing, but I'm actually really happy I chose to add it, since I think the song is underrated, and her talent has been taking a back seat to Cardi B's drama.

My friend Marty gave me a 12" of "One Night Stand" years ago, and it put this British girl group on my radar. I like how much of their sound and their remixes go into the UK Garage-sound direction. I also love it when bands refer to other singles in their lyrics: "A one night stand just ain't enough." It's fun and I like to have fun.

When "Yoga" came out I was like "oh no has the unthinkable happened? Has Janelle Monáe CROSSED OVER?!?" I still don't know the details behind how this track came about (I know: google it), but after the amazing Dirty Computer came out, I am getting into this track a lot more. I think she stays true to herself in this track, but her vocal does have pop appeal as well. "You cannot police me, so get off my areola." I still don't know who Jidenna is. (I know: google it.)

So, which Jeezy feature wins?

Rihanna: "Hard"
Go hard or go home, back to your residence
Soon as the Red Dogs give the block back to the presidents
I used to run my whole block like Obama and them
You ain't gotta believe me, go ask my momma and them
Couldn't even come in my room, smelled like a kilo
Look like me and two of my boys playing casino
Count the style I keep in my bag, they can't afford it
Tell 'em "give me back my swag!" They trying to clone it
See my Louis chucks, Louis flag, Louis frames, Louis belt
What that make me, "Louis Mane"?
I'm in the all-white party wearing all black
With my new black watch, call it the heart attack
Cardiac arrest, Carti'ac a wrist
Yeah, they say they hard, they ain't hard as this
Hard: the one word describes me
If I wasn't doing this, you know where I'd be
Christina Milian: "Say I"
My nephew getting older and he starting to talk
Now my moms got sick and she can't walk
No high school diploma but I know math
Ain't write one song but she still want half
Dead beat dad is what the media would say
Best father in the world, that's what my son would say
Won't stop till you broke, that's what his moms would say
But hey, them are types of games she play
The media talk so bad about me
But the streets'll do so bad without me
Can't ban the snowman
This is Thug Motivation, just part of the program
YEAHHHHHHHHHHH, The first day of class
And all you gotta do is stack cash to pass
Don't mind me, I'm just thinking out loud (Heeeyyy)
Purple haze got my head in the cloud

dolphinbright, "January Dance Break" with Little Dragon, Miami Horror, Tuxedo, Crazy P, Parcels, Jean Tonique, Gigamesh

Each month my first inclination is to put together of collection of funky tunes. I have to say that winter has brought me down a bit and I find myself needing tight beats to keep my spirits up more than ever.

This playlist starts off with three of my favorite big sound, big bass bands: Little Dragon, Miami Horror and Tuxedo. If you have the chance to see any of those three live - DO IT. And invite your friends. You won't be sorry, they won't be sorry.

The following tracks feature artists and bands that I have stumbled on the last three weeks as I stalk Mayor Hawthorne and Chromeo on social media.

I hope this month dolphinbright brings a smile to your face and a sway to your hips. Take a dance break, you deserve it.

Top Tunes 1811-12 / Hot 100: Ariana Grande, Travis Scott, Halsey, Panic! At The Disco, Marshmello, Kodak Black, Khalid, Maroon 5

NEW
#1 THANK U, NEXT / Ariana Grande

Erin - ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ "My jam" I’m such an Ariana fan it’s easy to forget that she hasn’t had a number one single before this. I’m tempted to say this single isn’t deserving the title of her highest charting hit, but you can’t deny the masses. What this track lacks lyrically or musically, it more than makes up for in cultural relevance. We spent 2018 watching her engagement to Pete Davidson and though it wasn’t a ploy, it was the perfect PR set up for a song. On top of that, it’s the perfect upbeat anthem. Everyone has something in their life they say “Thank u, next” to. Well played, Ariana, and congrats on now 7 weeks at #1.

Matt - ⭐️⭐️⭐️ "Turn it up" Love this song and I would have appreciated it on Sweetener, which felt a little light-weight and a little Pharrell-heavy. Release and concept of this song reminds me of Eminem's "Killshot" which trailed on the heels of a full release and added personal drama to the mix.

DOWN 1
#2 SICKO MODE / Travis Scott

Erin - ⭐️⭐️ "Leave it on" This is a good, respectable track. Swae Lee is minimally featured here, but is also topping the dance charts featured on Ellie Goulding’s “Closer.” He seems to be connecting with the right people, and I’ll be watching him on the charts.

Matt - ⭐️⭐️⭐️ "Turn it up" This Billboard article is super interesting. Sounds like this one hit number one the hard way. Still, I'm encouraged that the pop landscape has made room for a track with such. weird format and not a lot of melody. Speaks to the power of having Drake on the track.

NEW
#3 WITHOUT ME / Halsey

Erin - ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ "My jam" Halsey is a treat. Her timbre is fantastic, I love hearing her voice on the radio. I’m a recent fan, but have gone back and listened to her entire catalog. "Without Me" is certainly the rawest and most sophisticated record so far, I think in large part that she wrote this from her perspective instead of through a concept as she’s done on both full length albums. So pleased that she was able to release this single.

Matt - ⭐️⭐️⭐️ "Turn it up" Halsey's vocal control and energy reminds me of Rihanna. I thought she was older than she is, so I'm hopeful she'll have a long career. She does a great job of harnessing angst without whining. This track has an effortlessness to it, while full of tension.

NEW
#4 HIGH HOPES / Panic! At The Disco

Erin - ⭐️⭐️⭐️ "Turn it up" A long time Panic! At The Disco fan, I’ve been happy to keep up with their discography throughout the years. I used the album "High Hopes" is on (Pray for the Wicked) as my training music for a 10k I ran this fall, so this song will always have good memories attached.

Matt - ⭐️⭐️⭐️ "Turn it up" Not my scene, but this track is a jewel. The timbre is perfect for the radio, and the attention to detail and tightness of arrangement (clocks in at 3:11) make this a powerhouse. Really just a wonderful number.

NEW
#5 HAPPIER / Marshmello

Erin - ⭐️⭐️⭐️ "Turn it up" I like this song a lot but I wish I hadn’t put it on my running playlist. It’s a fun listen but overplayed at my own fault. I wish Marshmello had more of a point of view. He keeps showing up in the charts but is so forgettable.

Matt - ⭐️ "Turn it off" Lost a star for getting old. Best thing Marshmello does on this song is step back and let Bastille do the work.

NEW
#6 ZEZE / Kodak Black

Erin - ⭐️⭐️ "Leave it on" The steel drum is fun and light, but this really isn’t my genre. I don’t care for Travis Scott’s signature yelling in the background, and I don’t like Kodak Black’s timbre or cadence.

Matt - ⭐️⭐️ "Leave it on" Steel drum adds a brightness to this trap song, creating depth when many other songs get washed away in gloom.

NEW
#7 LOVE LIES / Khalid

Erin - ⭐️⭐️ "Leave it on" I loved this song when it came out but it’s not interesting enough to stick around and I doubt we’ll see it on the oldies station one day when we inevitably become our parents. I’m excited to see more from Normani.

Matt - ⭐️⭐️ "Leave it on" Getting old, but this is just a good song.

DOWN 1
#8 GIRLS LIKE YOU / Maroon 5

Erin - ⭐️ "Turn it off" This song continued to top the charts into the Thanksgiving season but I can’t figure out why. I can only assume it’s ignorable enough that Spotify users continued to listen on premade mixes without noticing to hit ‘next.’

Matt - ⭐️ "Turn it off" The opening of this song gives away that it's going to be horrible. "It's been twenty FOUR hours I need MORE hours with you." Stupid, stupid lyric; stupid stupid melody. Hold on, there's still 4 minutes left.
