The kernel track for this list was Nicki's "Majesty," off her new album Queen, that "Chun-Li" is also on. It's a great song on a great album, but after the list started to take shape, "Chun-Li" started to fit in better among these other chart-toppers. I was hesitant to use "Chin-Li," because it may seem like a default "oh yeah and put that new Nicki on there, too" sort of thing, but I'm actually really happy I chose to add it, since I think the song is underrated, and her talent has been taking a back seat to Cardi B's drama.
My friend Marty gave me a 12" of "One Night Stand" years ago, and it put this British girl group on my radar. I like how much of their sound and their remixes go into the UK Garage-sound direction. I also love it when bands refer to other singles in their lyrics: "A one night stand just ain't enough." It's fun and I like to have fun.
When "Yoga" came out I was like "oh no has the unthinkable happened? Has Janelle Monáe CROSSED OVER?!?" I still don't know the details behind how this track came about (I know: google it), but after the amazing Dirty Computer came out, I am getting into this track a lot more. I think she stays true to herself in this track, but her vocal does have pop appeal as well. "You cannot police me, so get off my areola." I still don't know who Jidenna is. (I know: google it.)
