Monday Mix 190401: M.I.A., Lorde, Carly Rae Jepsen, Katy Perry, Dua Lipa, Glowie, Ariana Grande, Tove Lo

The kernel track for this playlist was "bloodline" from Ariana Grande's latest release. My initial take was to ferret out some other reggae-influenced pop (as can be heard in  "Galang" and "Body"), but the list took on its own voice over time.

"Galang," though it sounds dated here, is a pioneer song for today's politically-charged feminist pop music. The rough simplicity in this track keeps me coming back. "YA-YA-HEYYYYYYY!!!"

Headlines around the release of Lorde's Melodrama seemed to look back instead of forward, asking how she will redefine pop again, like she did with "Royals" and other singles from Pure Heroine. In that noise, I lost track of the actual music, and so ended up sleeping on this really energetic, heart-felt pop number. It came back on my radar in the form of the Chromeo remix, which I loved a lot, but it didn't fit this playlist.

"Body" is on here in honor of Saweetie's new release, Icy. I'm about her flow, but sometimes it doesn't translate in feature spots. I wanted to put a track from the new album on here, but nothing fit as well as this. I suggest "Dipped In Ice."
